Training in Tampa

The providers a Tampa session serves practice around the bay, in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties, and in Polk, Manatee and Sarasota beyond them. St. Petersburg and Clearwater are across the bridges from Tampa. Lakeland is about 45 minutes east on I-4, Bradenton and Sarasota are about an hour south on I-75, and Fort Myers is roughly two hours down the same road.

You can train one of two ways. An instructor travels to your practice and teaches you and your team on your own equipment, with travel inside the quote. Or you go to an instructor’s own working practice. Both are private, the patient is real and has consented, and the scope is agreed before you book.

Who can train? Anyone legally able to provide the treatment in Florida. Your license is what decides that, and Florida writes its rules license by license. The Florida section below shows how in short form and links to the full reading for each license, with its sources.

Local detail

Tampa at a glance.

The airports the instructor uses, the counties a Tampa session reaches, and the hospitals and schools around the bay.

Getting here

For training inside your practice, the instructor flies into Tampa International Airport (TPA), or into St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) in Clearwater when that is the shorter drive to a Pinellas County practice. Travel and lodging are built into the quote.

The area a Tampa session covers

Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties. That takes in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Brandon, Riverview, Wesley Chapel, New Port Richey, Lakeland, Bradenton and Sarasota. Practices elsewhere in the state have their own pages: Orlando, Jacksonville and Miami.

Health systems around Tampa Bay

Tampa providers practice alongside Tampa General Hospital, a private not-for-profit hospital licensed for 982 beds that, in its own words, serves a dozen counties with a population in excess of 4 million; and BayCare, formed in 1997 by a core group of local hospitals and now operating 16 hospitals, all not-for-profit. Across the bay, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg became, in 2011, the first hospital outside the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., region to join Johns Hopkins Medicine.

USF Health and Moffitt

The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine was established by the Florida Legislature in 1965, enrolled its charter class in 1971 and took the Morsani name in 2011. Tampa General has been affiliated with the college since the school was created in the early 1970s. Moffitt Cancer Center is, by its own account, the first NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida.

Worth knowing

Tampa General Hospital performed the state’s first successful heart transplant in 1985, and it has since performed more than 13,000 adult solid organ transplants. Source

The market

Tampa Bay in numbers.

Four counties around one bay, in the figures public agencies publish about them: residents, growth, age, physicians, the bridge and the airport. The source is linked beside each number.

Two large counties on opposite shores

Hillsborough County has 1,574,115 residents on about 1,022 square miles of land, by the Census Bureau’s July 2025 estimate. Source Pinellas County, on the other shore, fits 948,563 people into about 274 square miles. At the 2020 census, Pinellas had about 3,500 people per square mile Source and Hillsborough about 1,430. The City of Tampa accounts for 413,554 of Hillsborough’s residents, Source roughly a quarter.

The bridge in the middle

Interstate 275 crosses the bay on the Howard Frankland Bridge. The Florida Department of Transportation opened a new southbound bridge to traffic in 2025, and its project page gives the work a length of 5.8 miles, from 4th Street in Pinellas to State Road 60 in Hillsborough. Source A practice in St. Petersburg and a practice in Tampa are a bridge apart, which is why the plan for a session starts from your address.

The new residents are north and east

Measured from the 2020 census base to July 2025, Pasco County grew 20.0 percent, to 674,516 residents, Source and Polk County 20.7 percent, to 874,790. Source Hillsborough grew 7.8 percent. Source Pinellas went the other way and lost 1.1 percent. Source The country grew 3.1 percent over the same stretch. Source Put the four counties together and you have 4,071,984 residents, by our sum.

Each side of the bay has its own age mix

In Hillsborough County, 20.9 percent of residents are under 18 and 16.5 percent are 65 or older. Source Across the water in Pinellas it is 14.3 and 28.7 percent, Source and in Pasco 22.4 percent are 65 or older. Source For the United States the two figures are 21.1 and 18.9 percent. Source Hillsborough sits near the national mix, and Pinellas has twice the share of older residents that it has of children. All of this describes residents, not patients.

Physicians cluster in the two bay counties

Each year the Florida Department of Health reports on the physician workforce, using the survey that goes with license renewal. The 2025 report shows 4,838 physicians in Hillsborough and 2,979 in Pinellas, which it puts at 31.14 and 30.40 per 10,000 residents. Pasco has 1,043 and Polk 1,169, at 17.11 and 14.77 per 10,000. Source Those are survey respondents, so the table is smaller than the license rolls. The Hillsborough County Medical Association dates itself to September 3, 1895, when the Hillsborough County Medical Society was founded in a second floor office at 217 Franklin Street, over the Bay Pharmacy. Its history page lists 3,435 members. Source

Five miles from downtown to the terminal

Tampa International says it is “located just five miles west of downtown Tampa on the east shore of Tampa Bay.” Source Its activity report for calendar year 2025 counts 24,811,007 passengers. Source The second airport is on the Pinellas side: St. Pete-Clearwater International gives its address as 14700 Terminal Boulevard, Clearwater. Source

Practices by type, shore by shore

The 2023 county file of County Business Patterns, a Census Bureau count of business locations, has 1,322 offices of physicians in Hillsborough County and 1,069 in Pinellas, about four fifths as many. Source On the other two lines the shores are nearly level. Hillsborough has 203 offices of chiropractors and Pinellas 189. For offices of physical, occupational and speech therapists and audiologists, which the Census groups together, it is 220 and 207. Elsewhere in the area, Sarasota County has 511 physician offices, Pasco 484, Manatee 306 and Polk 304. These are locations with paid employees, so the figures count business locations and not clinicians.

Local rules

What Tampa and Hillsborough County ask of a practice.

Your license and the state decide what you may do in the room, and the Florida section below covers that. This section covers the rest of running a practice at a Tampa address as of October 2026: the county, city and state offices that deal with the business. It shows where to start and is not legal advice. Confirm each point with the office named in the row.

A county receipt, and a city one inside Tampa

Hillsborough County’s startup guide says “A Business Tax Receipt is required for anyone conducting business in Hillsborough County.” Source The county Tax Collector says a business located within one of the county’s three municipalities needs a Hillsborough County receipt in addition to any the municipality requires. Source Tampa’s comes from the city’s Business Tax Division, under Chapter 24 of the City of Tampa Code. Source

The name on the door

The county guide says that if a sole proprietorship uses any name other than the owner’s legal name, or a corporation a name other than its legal corporate name, a fictitious name “must be registered with the State.” Source That is the Florida Division of Corporations, which adds a local step: the name has to run at least once in a newspaper in the county of your principal place of business. Source The Tax Collector asks for “the fictitious name registration, if applicable” when you apply for a receipt. Source

When a suite needs a Certificate of Occupancy

The City of Tampa’s Construction Services says a Certificate of Occupancy is required for all new construction and “when the occupancy classification of a building changes,” and that it is obtained from Inspection Services at the Construction Services Center. Source How we read it: before leasing a suite last used for something other than a medical office, ask Construction Services whether your use changes its classification.

The health office follows the county line

The Florida Department of Health says county health departments are located in all of Florida’s 67 counties. Source How we read it: a Tampa or Brandon practice deals with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County, and a St. Petersburg or Clearwater practice with the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County.

Biomedical waste and the sharps program

The Hillsborough office says its Environmental Health Services “inspects, permits, and investigates any complaints associated with facilities that generate, transport, and/or treat biomedical waste” in the county. It also runs a no-cost sharps drop-off for residents, and says “All professionals and businesses are regulated under state and federal biomedical waste laws, and may not participate.” Source The state department says a permitted facility qualifies for an exemption by documenting, for the previous 12 months, less than 25 pounds of biomedical waste in each 30-day period. Source

Florida rules

Florida scope and law, in brief.

This short version, current to October 2026, is a starting point, not legal advice. The full reading, license by license with every statute linked, is in the Florida scope and law sections on our Miami page, and our summary is on the rules by state page.

It is your responsibility to confirm the modality is legal in your state for your license. Do that before you book. The authority on your own scope is your licensing board, not us.

Physicians, NPs and PAs

The Board of Medicine and the Board of Osteopathic Medicine license physicians. Florida has restricted practice for nurse practitioners, according to the AANP. Source An NP registered for autonomous practice may use it only in primary care. Source Other NP work runs under a protocol with a supervising physician. Source A PA practices under physician supervision. Source

RNs, chiropractic physicians and physical therapists

How we read it: an RN’s part in a procedure starts from an order by a practitioner authorized to prescribe it. Source Chiropractic physicians are prohibited from prescribing or administering any legend drug, apart from emergency oxygen and certain topical anesthetics. Source Florida’s definition of physical therapy does not list injections. Source Chiropractic physicians and physical therapists: ask your board before booking an injection course.

Stem cell law and Right to Try

SB 1768 (2025) lets a physician perform stem cell therapy that is not FDA approved, within their scope of practice, for orthopedics, wound care or pain management, under its sourcing, notice and consent rules. Source It does not mention platelet-rich plasma. Whether your product or procedure falls under it is a question for your counsel and your board. Florida’s Right to Try Act (2015) covers investigational drugs, biological products or devices for a patient with a terminal condition who meets its conditions. Source The FDA’s rules for human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products apply in every state.

Common questions

What Tampa providers ask before they book.

How much does training in Tampa cost?

Training inside your own practice in Tampa starts at $10,000, with the instructor's travel and lodging included. Training at an instructor's location starts at $5,000. Both are starting points. The quote depends on the discipline, the instructor, how many people are training and how much of the curriculum is built around you.

Do you train on the Pinellas side, in St. Petersburg and Clearwater?

Yes. Pinellas County is part of the area a Tampa session covers, along with Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota. The two shores are joined by Interstate 275 over the Howard Frankland Bridge, which the Florida Department of Transportation lists as a 5.8 mile project between 4th Street in Pinellas and State Road 60 in Hillsborough. Source Give the street address when you ask for a date, so we know which shore the day starts on.

Which airport would the instructor come through, Tampa International or St. Pete-Clearwater?

Usually Tampa International (TPA), which describes itself as five miles west of downtown Tampa on the east shore of the bay. Source St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE) is across the bay in Clearwater Source and can be the shorter drive to a Largo or Clearwater practice. That choice is ours to sort out, and the quote already carries the instructor's travel and lodging.

Is Florida law any different for a practice in Tampa than for one in Miami or Orlando?

No. Your scope comes with your Florida license, and the laws that touch this field are state laws, so Hillsborough and Pinellas read the same statutes as every other county. The Florida section above has it in brief, and our Miami page carries the full reading for each license. Local offices only come into it on the business side, which the local rules section of this page covers.

I practice in Sarasota, Bradenton or Lakeland. Is Tampa my page?

It is. Manatee, Sarasota and Polk counties are all inside the area a Tampa session covers. Lakeland is about 45 minutes east on I-4, and Bradenton and Sarasota are about an hour south on I-75. Fort Myers is roughly two hours down the same road and we have not built it a page, so ask from this one and include the address. Sessions are private, and nothing is booked until the plan is settled with you.

I'm not licensed in Florida. Can I train in Tampa?

Tell us when you request a date. If we come to you, you train at your own practice under the license you already hold there. If you come to an instructor's location in Florida, what you do hands on depends on your licensure in Florida, and we set the plan with you before you book.

Important information

Read this before you book.

Know what a course is not before you book. It won’t make you a specialist. It carries no CMEs, credit hours or accreditation, and it doesn’t cover your malpractice: you arrange that yourself. No one can promise you outcomes. It is education for licensed providers, not medical or legal advice, and some products and modalities discussed are not FDA approved or cleared for the uses discussed. The Certificate of Completion is not a license or a board certification, and it does not expand your scope of practice. Read the full notes.
