Dr. Carla Mazzeo, Ph.D.

Founder, SAFE✓™ | MISEV2023 Co-Author | ISEV Tech Board Member | Boston University | King’s College London | Exosomes Expert Since 2004

Location : Boston, Massachusetts

Speaks : English, Spanish

Dr. Carla Mazzeo, PhD is the Founder of SAFE✓™ and one of the world’s foremost authorities on exosome and extracellular vesicle science. An expert in the field since 2004, she is among the very few researchers globally to have studied exosome biogenesis from first principles.

ABOUT

Dr. Carla Mazzeo founded and directed the first EV Core Facility at Boston University, which she established in 2020, and has set up SAFE✓™ (Standards and Assessment for Exosomes) reference laboratories at Boston University and King’s College London.

Her leadership spans academic research, commercial R&D, and clinical investigation at the same time. That combination gives her a firsthand understanding of the operational, regulatory, and quality challenges that EV manufacturers and clinical practitioners face, and positions her to define the standards the industry requires.

EXPERIENCE

Dr. Mazzeo earned her PhD in Biochemistry. Her doctoral work at the Autonomous University of Madrid focused on the role of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) in T and B lymphocyte exosome secretion, establishing foundational understanding of how EVs are produced at the cellular level. She also completed post-graduate training at MIT in Drug and Medical Device Development.

In 2015 she made a landmark discovery, the first demonstration that eosinophils secrete exosomes and that these vesicles play a direct role in asthma pathogenesis. The work was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and later confirmed by independent research groups worldwide.

She is a co-author of MISEV2023, the 382-author global consensus document that defines the international standard for EV research. Her record includes more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in Nature, Science, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and other high-impact journals, with 5,619 Google Scholar citations.

Prior to founding SAFE✓™, Carla Mazzeo served for three years as Director of Research and Development at a leading bioregenerative center in New York dedicated to stem cells and extracellular vesicles, one of the few therapeutic, medical device, and cosmetic EV facilities of its kind in the United States. Concurrent with her directorship of the EV Core Facility at Boston University, she led product development, conducted a systematic characterization and comparison study of commercial exosome products carried out at Boston University and Harvard Medical School, and served as principal investigator of a published clinical study on the combined effects of exosomes and microneedling (2024).
