## Training in Houston

Most Houston providers who ask us practice in Harris County or one of the counties around it: Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria and Galveston. Katy is out west along I-10, Sugar Land is southwest on US 59, and The Woodlands and Conroe are north up I-45. Galveston is about 50 miles down I-45 on the Gulf, and Beaumont is about 85 miles east on I-10.

There are two routes. The instructor can come to your practice and teach you and your staff with your own equipment, travel built into the quote. Or you can train at an instructor’s own working practice. Either way the session is private, the patients are real and have consented, and we set the scope with you before you book.

Who can train? Anyone legally able to provide the treatment in Texas, which depends on your license. Texas sets different terms for each one. The Texas section below gives the short version and links to the full reading, license by license, sources included.

Local detail

## Houston at a glance.

The airports the instructor uses, the counties a Houston session reaches, and the medical center and health systems nearby.

### Getting here

When the course runs in your practice, the instructor flies into [George Bush Intercontinental Airport](https://www.fly2houston.com/iah/) (IAH) or [William P. Hobby Airport](https://www.fly2houston.com/hou/) (HOU), whichever serves your side of the city. Both are run by the Houston Airport System. The instructor’s travel and lodging are part of the quote.

### The area a Houston session covers

Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria and Galveston counties, and Waller, Liberty or Chambers if that is where you practice. That includes Katy, Cypress, Spring, The Woodlands, Conroe, Humble, Kingwood, Baytown, Pasadena, Pearland, Sugar Land, League City, Friendswood and Galveston. Practices elsewhere in Texas have their own pages: [San Antonio](/san-antonio-texas/), [Austin](/austin-texas/) and [Dallas](/dallas/).

### The Texas Medical Center

Many Houston providers work in or around the [Texas Medical Center](https://www.tmc.edu/about-tmc/), which calls itself “the largest medical complex in the world.” It began in 1943, when the City of Houston provided 134 acres next to Hermann Hospital. [UTHealth Houston](https://www.uth.edu/about/), home of McGovern Medical School, is located in the heart of it. [Houston Methodist](https://www.houstonmethodist.org/about-us/) has its flagship hospital there and seven more hospitals across Greater Houston. [Baylor College of Medicine](https://www.bcm.edu/about-us) describes itself as a health sciences university.

### Public hospitals and Galveston

[Harris Health](https://www.harrishealth.org/about-us-hh), established in 1966, is the public safety-net provider for the residents of Harris County; its Ben Taub Hospital is a Level I trauma center and its Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital a Level III trauma center. Down the coast, [UTMB](https://www.utmb.edu/about) opened in Galveston in 1891 as, in its own words, “the nation’s first public medical school and hospital under unified leadership,” and now runs hospitals on four campuses.

### Worth knowing

In 1976, Hermann Hospital launched Life Flight, which the Texas Medical Center calls the first private hospital air ambulance service. [Source](https://www.tmc.edu/about-tmc/)

The market

## Greater Houston in numbers.

What the public record says about where you practice: how many people live here, how old they are, how many clinicians work here, and how far apart it all is. Every figure links to the page it came from.

### Five million people in one county

The Census Bureau’s July 2025 estimate puts Harris County at 5,045,026 residents, on about 1,707 square miles of land. [Source](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/harriscountytexas/PST045225) Size is the first thing to plan around here. A practice in Katy and a practice in Clear Lake are both Houston, and they sit on opposite sides of the county. It is why a session is planned around your address, not around downtown.

### A younger county than the country

In Harris County, 24.8 percent of residents are under 18 and 13.1 percent are 65 or older. [Source](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/harriscountytexas/PST045225) For the United States as a whole, the same figures are 21.1 percent and 18.9 percent. [Source](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/PST045225) That leaves about 62 percent of the county between 18 and 64, against 60 percent nationally. These are counts of residents, not of patients: who comes through your door depends on your specialty and where your referrals come from.

### More than a quarter born abroad

Of Harris County’s residents, 26.8 percent were born outside the United States, and 45.0 percent of those aged five and older speak a language other than English at home. Both figures cover 2020 to 2024. [Source](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/harriscountytexas/PST045225) The City of Houston says at least 145 languages are spoken by its residents. [Source](https://www.houstontx.gov/abouthouston/houstonfacts.html)

### How many clinicians work here

The Texas Medical Board’s May 2026 count lists 18,292 physicians in Harris County, out of 78,290 across Texas. [Source](https://www.tmb.texas.gov/file/statistics-physicians-by-gender-and-county-may-2026) Its count of physician assistants for the same month lists 2,151 in the county, out of 11,765 statewide. [Source](https://www.tmb.texas.gov/file/statistics-physician-assistants-by-gender-and-county-may-2026) The [Harris County Medical Society](https://www.hcms.org/tmaimis/AboutUs), established in 1903, calls itself the largest county medical society in the nation and says it represents more than 15,000 physicians and medical students.

### The counties around Harris

The same board count lists 1,697 physicians in Fort Bend County, 1,564 in Montgomery, 1,200 in Galveston and 495 in Brazoria. [Source](https://www.tmb.texas.gov/file/statistics-physicians-by-gender-and-county-may-2026) Add Harris and that is 23,248 physicians across the five counties a Houston session usually covers.

### Two airports, one system

The Houston Airport System says it handled over 62 million passengers in 2025: more than 48.7 million at George Bush Intercontinental and 13.9 million at William P. Hobby. It counts nonstop service to over 189 destinations from Intercontinental and 81 from Hobby. [Source](https://www.fly2houston.com/airport-business/about/) The two sit on opposite sides of downtown, which is why the instructor’s airport depends on where in the county you practice.

### The Medical Center, by its own count

The [Texas Medical Center](https://www.tmc.edu/about-tmc/) reports 10 million patient encounters a year, more than 120,000 employees and 54 million developed square feet, and describes itself as the 8th largest business district in the U.S.

### Practices by type

The Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns county file for 2023 counts 3,888 offices of physicians in Harris County, 372 offices of chiropractors and 419 offices of physical, occupational and speech therapists and audiologists, which it reports as one group. [Source](https://www.census.gov/data/datasets/2023/econ/cbp/2023-cbp.html) That is roughly one chiropractic office for every ten physician offices. The same file lists 718 physician offices in Fort Bend County, 551 in Montgomery, 239 in Brazoria and 182 in Galveston. These are business locations with paid employees, not a count of clinicians.

Local rules

## What Houston and Harris County ask of a practice.

What your license lets you do is the state’s call, and it is in the Texas section below. This section is the business side: the city, county and state offices a Houston practice deals with, as of October 2026. It is a starting point, not legal advice, so confirm each point with the office named.

### No general city business license

The City of Houston’s guide for new businesses says there is no general business license issued by the City. [Source](https://www.houstontx.gov/obo/solutionscenter/guides/NEW_BUSINESS_GUIDE.pdf) How we read it: there is no general City license to update when a practice adds a service. Whether a specific City permit applies to your space is a question for the City.

### A practice name that is not your own

For a sole proprietorship or general partnership, the same guide says anyone doing for-profit business in Houston or Harris County under a name other than their own is required by law to file an Assumed Name, or DBA, with the appropriate County Clerk, in every county with an actual physical business presence or sales presence. [Source](https://www.houstontx.gov/obo/solutionscenter/guides/NEW_BUSINESS_GUIDE.pdf) In Harris County that is the [Harris County Clerk](https://www.cclerk.hctx.net/). Corporations, limited liability companies and professional associations file their assumed names with the Texas Secretary of State, which says a law effective September 1, 2019 eliminated the county-level filing requirement for them. [Source](https://www.sos.state.tx.us/corp/namefilingsfaqs.shtml) How we read it: a PLLC or professional association files with the state, and a sole owner with the county.

### The space needs a Certificate of Occupancy

The Houston Permitting Center says a Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained before a commercial building, or an individual lease space within one, may be occupied, or if changes to an existing occupancy classification are made. [Source](https://www.houstonpermittingcenter.org/hpwcode1106) How we read it: the certificate goes with the space and its classification, so check it when you move, expand, take over a suite or change its use.

### Eight health departments for the Houston area

The Houston Health Department lists eight health departments for the Houston area: its own, Harris County Public Health, the Brazoria, Chambers and Montgomery county health departments, Fort Bend County Health and Human Services, the Galveston County Health District and a regional office of the Texas Department of State Health Services. [Source](https://www.houstonhealth.org/houston-area-health-departments) How we read it: which one is yours depends on where the practice sits, so ask.

### Medical waste: the state's transport rules

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality says a generator of 50 pounds or less a month of untreated medical waste is exempt from a permit or registration to transport its own waste, and that a generator of more than 50 pounds who intends to self-transport, and anyone transporting another generator’s waste, must register. Self-haulers and hired transporters both keep a record of each shipment. [Source](https://www.tceq.texas.gov/permitting/waste_permits/msw_permits/medwaste/medwaste-transporters) How we read it: these are state rules, so they apply in every Texas city. Ask the commission what counts as medical waste.

Texas rules

## Texas scope and law, in brief.

This is the short version, as of October 2026. The full reading, license by license with every statute linked, is in the [Texas scope and law sections](/dallas/#texas-scope) on our Dallas page, and our Texas summary is on the [rules by state page](/regenerative-medicine-laws-by-state/#texas). It is a starting point, not legal advice.

It is your responsibility to confirm the modality is legal in your state for your license. Do that before you book. The authority on your own scope is your licensing board, not us.

### Physicians, NPs and PAs

Physicians are licensed by the [Texas Medical Board](https://www.tmb.texas.gov/) and may delegate a medical act to “a qualified and properly trained person acting under the physician’s supervision” when a reasonable and prudent physician would. [Source](https://tcss.legis.texas.gov/resources/OC/htm/OC.157.htm) Texas has restricted practice for nurse practitioners, according to the AANP. [Source](https://www.aanp.org/advocacy/texas) NPs and PAs provide the medical side of care under a physician’s delegation, and prescribing runs through a prescriptive authority agreement. [Source](https://www.tmb.texas.gov/apply-renew/physician/prescribing-and-supervision)

### RNs, chiropractors and physical therapists

How we read the Nursing Practice Act: an RN’s hands-on part starts from a physician’s order or delegation. [Source](https://tcss.legis.texas.gov/resources/OC/htm/OC.301.htm) The chiropractic statute allows “nonsurgical, nonincisive procedures” and excludes incisive or surgical ones. [Source](https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/OC/htm/OC.201.htm) How we read the Physical Therapy Practice Act: it does not name injections. [Source](https://ptot.texas.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/PT-Practice-Act_2025.pdf) Chiropractors and physical therapists should take any injection course to their board before they book.

### Stem cell laws

Three Texas laws, HB 177 (2015), HB 810 (2017) and HB 3148 (2019), cover adult stem cell use, investigational stem cell treatment under an institutional review board, and a physician registry. [Source](https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/HS/htm/HS.1003.htm) None of their sections mentions platelet-rich plasma. Whether a product or procedure falls under them is a question for your counsel and your board. The FDA’s rules apply in every state on top of Texas law.

### Your boards in Texas

## Two ways to train in Houston, and both are private.

The hands-on work with a consenting patient is the same either way. What changes is whose room it is, and who from your practice is in it. Both prices are starting points: the quote depends on the course, how many people are training and how much of the curriculum is built around you.

Common questions

## What Houston providers ask before they book.

### How much does training in Houston cost?

Training inside your own practice in Houston starts at $10,000, with the instructor's travel and lodging included. Training at an instructor's location starts at $5,000. Both are starting points. The quote depends on the discipline, the instructor, how many people are training and how much of the curriculum is built around you.

### Do you come to practices outside the Loop, in Katy, The Woodlands or Sugar Land?

Yes. A Houston session can run anywhere in Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria or Galveston County, and Harris County alone covers about 1,707 square miles. [Source](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/harriscountytexas/PST045225) Give us the practice address when you request a date. The instructor's travel and lodging are part of the quote wherever in the area you practice.

### Which Houston airport does the instructor use?

Whichever is closer to you. The Houston Airport System puts George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) 23 miles north of downtown and William P. Hobby (HOU) 7 miles south. [Source](https://www.fly2houston.com/airport-business/about/) Practices in The Woodlands, Spring, Humble or Kingwood are nearer Intercontinental. Practices in Pearland, Clear Lake, League City or Galveston are nearer Hobby. The instructor's travel and lodging are part of the quote either way.

### Are the rules different in Houston than in Dallas, Austin or San Antonio?

No. Scope of practice and the stem cell laws are set by the State of Texas and its licensing boards, so the same rules apply in every Texas city. The short version is in the Texas section above, and the full reading, license by license, is on our [Dallas page](/dallas/#texas-scope). Which license you hold matters more than where in Texas you practice.

### My practice is in Galveston or Beaumont. Is this the right page?

For Galveston, yes. Galveston County is one of the five counties a Houston session covers, about 50 miles down I-45 from the city. Beaumont is about 85 miles east on I-10 and has no city page of its own, so request a date from this page and give us the practice address. We come to practices anywhere in Texas, and the instructor's travel and lodging are part of the quote.

### I'm not licensed in Texas. Can I train in Houston?

Say so when you request a date. When the instructor comes to you, you train in your own practice under the license you hold there. When you travel to an instructor's practice in Texas, your hands-on part depends on whether you are licensed in Texas, and we agree the plan with you before you book.

Important information

## Read this before you book.

Know what a course is not before you book. It won’t make you a specialist. It carries no CMEs, credit hours or accreditation, and it doesn’t cover your malpractice: you arrange that yourself. No one can promise you outcomes. It is education for licensed providers, not medical or legal advice, and some products and modalities discussed are not FDA approved or cleared for the uses discussed. The Certificate of Completion is not a license or a board certification, and it does not expand your scope of practice. [Read the full notes](/our-courses/#rma-compliance).
